Stuck in the middle?
As bars and restaurants dig into each other’s turf, are they suffering an
identity crisis?
Sangria
We admit that when we heard this tapas place just off the Clybourn corridor had
a 4 a.m. liquor license, we thought it sounded like a good place for a
late-night drink and not much else. Since opening this spring, owners have been
determined the food here won't take a backseat to the drinks. They're
succeeding: The dining room's so packed that the earliest last-minute
reservation we could snag on a Saturday night was 10:30 p.m. Though we're
sometimes underwhelmed with the food (chips and dips, $7.95), we're often
impressed (ahi tuna Ceviche, $6.95). Well, we're right about the drinks: 12
varieties of sangria and you're bound to find one you like. Our pick: champagne
sangria ($3.95).
Verdict: Restaurant, with a built-in after-hours drinking destination

WBBM Restaurant Review By Sherman Kaplan
"Visually, Sangria is kind of edgy with bold rectangular shapes,
splashing color cues on a field of sangria red. Here and there, bright mosaics
add more visual statement. "
"One of the best choices on the Sangria menu is the Chef’s Special Dinner. For
about $27, diners get a choice of paella, and any three tapas. That would
include a tasty tuna ceviche timbale, or perhaps warmed roasted red peppers
stuffed with manchego cheese. Seared sea scallops are four to the order, with a
sweet, almost buttery flavor, the kind that makes you wish it were a larger
portion. Among other nauticals, grilled octopus or calamari are tasty tidbits."
